You heard right! Stephanie Nielson, author of the NieNie Dialogues, is coming to BYU!
So mark your calendar for Thursday, September 30th at 7:00 pm. The event will be in the Wilkinson Center Ballroom.
Stephanie is helping us kick off a new campaign here at Women’s Services called Recapturing Beauty.
Through experiences with hundreds of women in our professional and personal lives, we couldn’t help but notice that every single woman we knew had something negative to say about her appearance. What a shame! We are literal children of God. How can we have so many harsh things to say about the incredible bodies we have each been given? How can we reject these magnificent gifts with our nipping, tucking, molding, and controlling?
To combat the fallacies surrounding beauty, Women’s Services presents a series of events and support groups to help women live lives of greater fulfillment, at peace with their appearances.
Recapturing Beauty is a campaign to reshape our ideas and attitudes about beauty away from those promoted in our popular culture. The definition of beauty has been hijacked by a group of people and industries who have in mind profit more than beauty. We are sold ideas of beauty that are very hard to attain unless, of course, we have enough money.
When we make beauty exclusive and difficult to attain, it sets up a culture of self-loathing, competition and envy. None of these reflect the true nature of women.
Instead of embarking on more meaningful quests, we place our faith in products and images. Rather than loving our bodies and being peaceful, respectful and gentle with them we attack, manipulate and try to control them, never feeling satisfied.
Recapturing Beauty is about reclaiming the truth about beauty so that we can find peace and contentment in our bodies and in our lives.
………………………………………………………………………………
Stephanie Nielson will speak about her experiences and how each of us can find beauty in ourselves.
The event is open to the public! Community members, men, women, students, spouses of students, people who have never heard of BYU—all welcome!! There is no need to register; just be at the Wilkinson Center Ballroom on BYU Campus on Thursday, September 30th at 7:00 pm!

I am so thrilled about this new campaign! I do not live in Utah but I will consider myself a member of the "Recapturing our Beauty" aganda even though I cannot attend the event! Thank you for promoting these measures. It is so badly needed in our world, in our wards!

Will this event be taped and posted on the internet so that others not in the area can see it? Really hope so!!
There seriously needs to be more events like this that span across the country in big cities, small towns and everywhere in between.
This society has gone too far out of control when it comes to judging one another on appearances. I absolutely love seeing women with unique features, whether they were born "different" or became different through life's journey. Why do we all have to meet this ridiculous standard of beauty when beauty comes in so many forms? Even those of us who are "outside of the box" with appearances that almost always get ridiculed or gawked at or shunned are so amazingly wonderful. Oh people say we are pretty but there is a sense of pity or empathy in their tone. I want people to actually embrace and genuinely see how our varying appearances make us just as valuable as the cookie cutter beauties that flood our every day life on covers of magazines, in the news, etc.
This world just has to stop with all the shallow strictly defined media driven nonsense that is setting up each new generation with more ignorance in their hearts towards one another.
I am deformed in appearance and I am proud of being different. I just wish the rest of the world could see me as I see myself. This is my greatest struggle in my life, to be accepted as I am. Pity and sympathy are not wanted or welcomed. I am beautiful as I am and all women should feel the same about themselves.
I hope Stephanie can help break down the barriers that we face in this shallow world.
I so wish this was closer to home so I could come.
Stephanie's story has touched me so deeply I can't even begin to put it all here.
She has the power within her to change lives and people. There is a lot to be said about how inner beauty sustains us in critical life altering experiences.
She is one of those people who's story shared alters the life of others for the better.
Any chance this will be filmed so most of us who cannot attend will see it? Would love to see and hear her speak-what a treat:)
I wish I was going to be Utah to attend this but I am encouraging my daughter who is at BYU to attend. Thanks so offering such a wonderful program
I wish I was in Utah and could attend. I am encouraging my daughter at BYU to get a group of her friends together and come. We have been followers of Stephanie's for several years and her story is one of inspiration and motivation. She is just as beautiful today as she was before the accident and I am excited for my daughter to listen to her and feel of her spirit and courage.
Can't attend, live near Paris, France. Wish I could really. Mrs Stephanie Nielson is so brave. Because it takes courage to be "different". Thank you for your campaign. Hope it is successful, hope it helps support the many people who feel abandoned.
Any chance this could be filmed so those who cannot attend can view it?
Please?
I wish I could go!!!!! Please say this will be available at LEAST to read! I really wish I could be there. Go Steph! You're an inspiration to us all!!!
Please tape and upload for viewing!!! Pleeeeeasseeee!!!!
This will be fabulous!!!!! I think a better place for this would be the Marriott Center. So many more women could attend this way. I can see this completely filling up to capacity and then women being turned away.
"..We couldn’t help but notice that every single woman we knew had something negative to say about her appearance."
Do you mean each woman had something negative to say about herself or about Stephanie Nielson? If it's the latter, the world is a more terrible place than I imagined. Her strength and grace is astounding.
I'm planing to assist to the event but I would like to know how long is going to be the event?
Thanks for your comments!
m,
we were meaning that we have never met a woman who didn't have something negative to say about herself.
The event will be about an hour and a half total.
Just wondering what kind of dress is it? Is it like formal or casual or business casual?
So...will we you post a link to the event so we can all see it, even if we're far away?
What is the dress for this event?
I am not able to attend. Stephanie has been a huge inspiration to me. I cant wait to read her post each morning. Is there any way this can be posted for viewing?
Please see the latest post, FAQ about Stephanie Nielson's event tonight, for answers to these questions.
It sounds like it will be broadcast, is that right? When & where?
Thanks
